Men's Basketball Drops Tough 68-60 Decision At Rhode Island College

Providence, R.I - December 11, 2008 - Despite a game-high 19 points from John Strawson, the Springfield College men's basketball team dropped a tough 68-60 decision at Rhode Island College in its final contest of the first semster on Thursday evening.

With the loss, the Pride fall to 6-3 throughout the first half of its season.

For RIC, senior guard Tirrell Hill became the 28th member of the Rhode Island College Menšs Basketball 1,000 Point Club in the victory, which improved the Anchormen to 5-2 this year.

Hill helped seal the win and reach his personal milestone on a three-pointer with 4:13 remaining in the game. On the ensuing possession, he connected on an NBA-range trifecta to increase the Anchormenšs lead to eight points, 61-53, with 3:15 left on the clock. He ended the game with 17 points, bringing his career total to 1,004. Hill added three steals and two boards in the win.

The Anchormen took an 8-6 lead on senior guard Bobby Bailey layup, which sparked a 16-5 run to build a game-high 11-point lead, 22-11, with 7:11 left in the first half. The Pride closed the gap in the final minutes of the frame, led by eight points from Strawson, cutting the the hostšs lead to one, 31-30, at the break.

Rhode Island College built its lead back up, holding a nine-point advantage, 45-36, at the 15:01 mark of the second stanza. The Pride continued to fight back and eventually took the lead, 48-47, as freshman center Ryan Coburn and sophomore forward Matthew Cavalieri contributed four points apiece during the run.

RIC senior Wil Lyons helped Hill close out the game, scoring six of his 10 second-half points and grabbing nine rebounds, down the stretch. The Anchormen put the contest out of reach from the free throw line as senior guard Cameron Stewart and sophomore backcourt mate Antone Gray each made a pair. Gray finished with nine points and game-high five assists.

Bailey saw his first action of the season after being sidelined with an injury. He didnšt miss a beat as he logged seven points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Strawson added six boards to go with his 19 points, while Pat Crean had a solid night with 13 points, eight boards, and four assists. As a team, Springfield notched seven blocks in the game, as Cavalieiri posted four stuffs to go along with eight points and seven rebounds.
