Men's Cross Country Takes Fifth at Purple Valley Classic

Williamstown, Mass. - September 24, 2011 - The Springfield College men’s cross country team had a solid showing at the Purple Valley Classic, placing fifth out of 16 teams in the 8K race held at Mount Greylock High School.

Host Williams College took the victory with 42 points, followed by Fordham (58 points), Middlebury (71), New York University (109), and Springfield with 133 points.

Ryan O’Connell finished in the top spot for the Pride, placing fourth overall with a time of 26:34. Zach Pietras followed close behind in ninth place, running a time of 26:45. Anthony Salvucci cracked the top-20 in 19th place, clocking in at 27:07 to give Springfield three runners in the top 20 spots.

David Birdsall also scored for the Pride, running a 27:54, good for 50th overall. Matt Scully rounded out the scoring for Springfield in the 63rd spot with a time of 28:16.

The Pride men have two weeks off to prepare for the New England Championships in Boston on Saturday, October 8.
