Ryan McGilvray Bristol, R.I. -- October 31, 2011 -- Defending champion Springfield College has been ranked #1 in the New England Wrestling Association pre-season ratings released earlier today. Nationally, the teams ranks 25th. The season begins this weekend for the Pride at the Ithaca Invitational under new head coach Jason Holder.

Springfield received 104 points to be ranked #1 in the NEWA poll, a scant one point ahead of Wesleyan (103). Those two squads split the first-place votes, with SC receiving seven of those votes. Last year's NEWA title was Springfield's 10th.

In third place was Johnson & Wales with 75 points, followed by Plymouth State with 72, and Rhode Island College with 69.

The second five found Williams with 53 points, followed by Roger Williams with 43, Coast Guard with 31, Bridgewater State with 29, and Southern Maine with 21. Others receiving votes included Trinity, Western New England, and WPI.

SC leads off the season with a weekend invitational at Ithaca. The tournament begins Friday (Nov. 4) at 3:30 pm, and continues Saturday (Nov. 5) at 10 am. The Pride will then host its annual Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday (Nov. 19) at 10 am.

Among individuals, Springfield has four who are mentioned within the national leaders. They are junior Joe Grippi (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) at 133 pounds -- rated 10th -- and senior Ryan McGilvray (Manalapan, N.J.) at 149, junior Michael Fish (Middletown, N.J.) at 174, and junior Jeremy Burns (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) at 197 -- all honorable mention.

Holder, who has been an assistant under Daryl Arroyo for the past four years, is ready to take over the Springfield program. Arroyo had been the head wrestling coach at Springfield for the past 21 years before becoming the Director of Athletics at Alfred State in Alfred, N.Y..
