Providence, R.I. - January 10, 2010 - The Springfield College women’s gymnastics team defeated host Rhode Island College, 180.675-164.850, in the season-opening meet for both clubs on Sunday afternoon at The Murray Center.
The Pride (1-0) posted the top three competitors on all four events. Junior Christina Pagella won on vault (9.425) and beam (9.425). Senior Jeanna Bradle won on bars (9.100), while classmate Ericca Castagna won on floor (9.350).
Springfield had a tremendous team showing as it handled the host Anchorwomen. As a team, Springfield placed the top six on the vault, bars, and beam, as well as took the top four spots on the floor exercise.
On the vault, Brittany Davis took second with a 9.350, while Bradle placed third with a 9.300. Megan German notched a second-place finish on the bars with a 8.850 and Kayleigh Davis tallied a third-place score of 8.700. Behind Pagella's outstanding first place score of 9.425 on the beam, Danielle Trota placed second with a 8.900 and Kristina Lantos took third with her mark of 8.800. On the floor, Pagella rounded out her standout day as she tied for second with teammate Lizzie Sartell as each registered scores of 9.250.
Rhode Island College (0-1) sophomore Jessica Greenwald was first in the all-around (34.500), while classmate Kate Bachelder finished second (32.475). Greenwald was RIC’s top performer on bars (8.325) and floor (8.950), tied with classmate Alana Henderson on beam (8.400) and was second on vault (8.825).
Next weekend, Springfield will head south to Connecticut for a tri-meet at Southern Connecticut State with Towson.
