Men's and Women's Track and Field Excels at the ECAC Division III Championships

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - March 3, 2007 - The Springfield College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams performed very well at the ECAC Division III Championships this past weekend at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. The men finished third of 55 teams with 40.5 points, while the women placed eighth of 56 teams with 27 points.

On the men’s side, freshman Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished third in the 55-meter dash, setting a school record with an NCAA qualifying time of 6.42 seconds. The old record of 6.44 seconds was held by Pat Samuels in 1980.

Sophomore Mike Griffin (Scarborough, Me.) finished second in the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:29.88. Junior Nick DeCelle (Mechanicville, N.Y.) also earned a second place finish, recording a distance of 45-feet, 1 1/2 inches in the triple jump.

Three athletes placed fifth in their events. They were senior Dave Forrette (Chicopee, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash (50.80), junior Dominic Uguccioni (Colrain, Mass.) in the weight throw (56- 4 ), and senior captain Jeff Cogan (Walworth, N.Y.) in the high jump (6- 4 ).

In the 4 x 200 relay, the Pride foursome of Headley, Forrette, freshman Jermaine Bell (Boston, Mass.), and junior Tim Rehm (Waldrick, N.J.) finished fourth (1:31.83) and in the 4 x 400 relay, Forrette, Rehm, sophomore Chris Okerblom (Salisbury, Md.), and sophomore Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed seventh (3:26.37).

The women’s indoor track and field team also had its fine moments this past weekend. Freshman Nikki Hay (Norwalk, Conn.) placed third in the triple jump (35-11 ), which is a personal best, and seventh in the long jump (16-11 ).

Two athletes placed fifth in their events. They were junior Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.) in the mile run (5:13.65) and sophomore Kelsey Bishop (Warwick, R.I.) in the weight throw. Bishop’s toss (50-7 ) was a personal best and an NCAA provisional qualifying throw.

SC’s 4 x 200 relay team of Hay, senior Julie Ferdella (Leicester, Mass.), sophomore Katie Parente (Torrington, Conn.), and freshman Nicole Reynolds (Riverside, R.I.) finished fourth with a time of 1:47.11, which is their best finish of the year. The Pride’s 4 x 800 relay team of Brigham, junior Kristyn Meade (Raynham, Mass.), freshman Chelsea Ellwood (San Diego, Calif.), and freshman Emma Lang (Woodstock, N.Y.) also finished fourth with a time of 9:43.08, which is another season best.

The 4 x 400 relay team of Hay, Parente, Reynolds, and freshman Catherine Croce (Wallkill, N.Y.) finished eighth, with a time of 4:08.07.

All of the above athletes received All-ECAC honors.

Up next are the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind. on Friday-Saturday, March 9-10.
