Forbes Shuts Down Westfield State To Lead Baseball To 4-1 Victory

Steve Forbes Box Score

Springfield, Mass. -- March 24, 2011 -- Senior Steve Forbes tossed a complete-game six-hitter while striking out seven to power the Springfield College baseball team to a 4-1 victory over local-foe Westfield State on Thursday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.

Springfield improves to 6-5 on the season and snapped its five-game losing skid with the victory. The visiting Owls dropped to 5-8 on the year and have lost their last three outings.

The win also marked head coach Mark Simeone's 250th career victory as the head coach at Springfield College. To date, in 15 years at Springfield, Simeone owns a record of 250-252 as the Pride's head coach. Simeone has an overall career record of 317-340-1.

Forbes was dominant as he picked up his second complete-game victory of the season. The senior went the distance, working nine innings and scattering six hits while punching out seven. He did not walk a batter and two of the six hits allowed came in his final inning of work.

Kyle DiFranco went 2-3 on the day, including a two-RBI single and a run scored. Matt Milano also had two hits on the afternoon, as he also produced a two-RBI single in the eighth inning.

For the visitors, Matt Kelly had a 3-4 day at the plate, accounting for half of the Owls hits. Despite out-hitting the Pride 6-5 on the day, the Owls hurt themselves with six errors in the contest. Five different pitchers toed the mound for Westfield State, however starter Nick Noblit shouldered the loss as he lasted four innings, giving up two unearned runs while striking out two and walking three.

The Owls plated their only run of the game in the top of the third. After Pete Hogan led off the inning with a single and then stole second, Pete Grillo singled to right field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Pride answered back to two-runs in the fourth to capture a lead it would not surrender. Brian Harris led off with walk and moved over to second after an error on Mike McGowan's fielder's choice in the infield. The duo would move into scoring position with a passed ball, leading to DiFranco's two-RBI single into right field.

Springfield tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth after Milano cracked a bases-loaded single to score teammates Mike Micik and DiFranco.

The Owls threatened in the ninth as back-to-back singles by pinch-hitter Tim Heintz and Kelly, coupled with a Springfield error, loaded the bases with no outs. However, Forbes got a fly-ball out before picking a big strike out to get two outs. Dale Crispin then blasted a ball into left center that DiFranco ran onto and made a beautiful, over-the-shoulder sprawling catch to end the game.

The Pride will continue its busy week of play as it battles WPI on Friday afternoon at 3:30 pm in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play.
