Men's Swimming And Diving Loses To Amherst, 138-91

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 10, 2002 – Springfield College sophomore Louis Arruda (West Warwick, R.I.) broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle (141.73) but the host Pride lost to Amherst 130-91 tonight at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.

Arruda, who also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (48.28), eclipsed former Olympian Howard Hinds' record of 1:42.02 established in 2000.

Amherst senior Russel Lang placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (55.82) and freshman Bryan Woo won in the 100-yard butterfly (52.47). Lang and Woo also led the Lord Jeffs 200-yard medley relay team to a first place finish (1:39.86).

Freshman Dan Moran (Wilbraham, Mass.) won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:51.52. The 400-yard relay team of freshmen Ross Craig (Brookfield, Conn.) and Brian Shea (Southbury Conn.), sophomore Robert Sullivan (Boston, Mass.), and junior Shawn Salvador (Chicopee, Mass.) also received first place honors with a time of 3.31.90

On the women’s side, Amherst sophomore Katheryn Shaw, who won in the 3-meter dive (226.72), led the Lord Jeffs to a 133-103 defeat of the Pride.

Springfield College junior Beth Byron (Haverhill, Mass.) placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.61).
