Women's Track and Field Places Fifth of 19 at Tufts University

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., February 4, 2006 - Springfield College freshman Silvienne Krosendijk (Seroe Biento, Aruba) finished first in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 2 ” to lead the Pride to a fifth-place finish out of 19 teams this Saturday at the Tufts Stampede in Medford, Mass.

On the men’s side, junior Alex Kampersal (Natick, Mass.) continued his dominance in the shot put, winning the event with a toss of 51’ 9 ”, and helping Springfield to an eighth place finish out of 16 teams.

The meet featured competition from Division I, II, and III schools. Tufts won both the men’s and women’s meets. The men’s final team scores were as follows: Tufts (165), Stonehill (90), UMass Lowell (78), Ithaca (53), UMass Dartmouth (47), Eastern Connecticut State (47), WPI (46), SC (43), Trinity (34), Worcester State (31), RIC (22), Conn College (20), Roger Williams (19), Brandeis (14), Fitchburg State (10), and MIT (6).

The women’s final rankings were: Tufts (157), UMass Lowell (153), Ithaca (92), MIT (53), SC (52), Brandeis (49), Trinity (35), Stonehill (33), Conn College (32), Worcester State (22), WPI (20), UMass Dartmouth (11), Wellesley (11), RIC (8), Emmanuel (5), Fitchburg State (3), Roger Williams (2), Regis (2), and Eastern Connecticut State (1).

The women blazed in the relays, both the 4x400 and 4x200 meter relay teams ran their fastest times of the season. The 4x400 meter relay team of senior Alisha Miner (Sanbornton, N.H.), junior Jen McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y.), freshman Eva Gibson-Mueller (Ipswich, Mass.), and sophomore Kristyn Meade (Raynham, Mass.) finished second at the meet with a time of 4:08.6. The 4x200 meter relay team of senior Yasmin Goris (Worcester, Mass.), freshman Vanessa Ricketts (Greenfield, Mass.), McBride, and Krosendijk placed third in 1:49.32.

Also contributing to the points total was Goris’ fifth place finish in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.48 seconds, and Miner’s fifth place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.10. SC sophomore Alyssa Brigham (Penacook, N.H.) ran her fastest time of the year in the mile run where she ran a 5:19.29 to finish in 11th place out of 40 runners.

The men picked up some points in the middle distance events. Pride freshman Eric Nacsin (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took fourth place in the 600-meter dash in a speedy 1:25.01 which qualified him for the New England Division III Championships. Freshman Mike Griffin (Scarborough, Maine), just missed qualifying for DIII New England’s in the 800-meter run where he placed ninth with a time of 2:00.95. Sophomore Jeff Bartlett (West Newbury, Mass.) had a fourth place finish in the 1000-meter run (2:37.15).

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team of senior Billy King (Wilmington, Mass.), Chris Okerblom (Salisbury, Md.), Chris Keyser (West Newbury, Mass.), and Nacsin, finished in third place with a time of 3:32.45.

The women’s track and field team will send competitors to Boston University this Friday, February 10th, and then will compete at MIT on Saturday, February 11th. The men’s team will split their squad and send some team members to Boston University and others to MIT on Saturday.
