Pennington, Sobel, Thompson Repeat As NEWMAC Athletes of the Week

Brian Sobel Springfield, Mass. -- December 6, 2010 -- For the second-straight week, Kellie Pennington, Brian Sobel, and Jennifer Thompson have all been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for their efforts in swimming and diving at The College of New Jersey Invitational this past weekend.

Pennington, a freshman from Monson, Mass,, recorded three individual victories over the weekend at the Invitational, and has been named the NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week. She took home the win in the 100 fly with a NCAA qualifying time of 57.66. She controlled the 100 free event, placing first and posting her second win of the night. In that event, she again had an NCAA qualifying time of 51.84. She also continued to excel in the 50 free as she won in 23.56. As for relay events, she was on the winning 400 relay that cruised to victory in 3:32.82, swam on the winning 200 free relay that sprinted to a win in 1:36.84, and was also a member of the winning 800 free relay that touched in 7:50.11.

Thompson, a freshman from Cheshire, Conn., continued to perform well for the Pride as she was named the NEWMAC Women's Diver of the Week. Thompson started the weekend off by placing third on the one-meter with a 421.35. The next evening, Thompson captured the title on the three-meter board as she recorded a 476.18. She was able to meet NCAA qualifying stands in both events during the weekend.

With the help of both Pennington and Thompson, the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team finished second out of six teams at the invitational with a total of 885 points.

On the men's side, Sobel, a senior from Stratford, Conn., was named the NEWMAC Men's Diver of the Week. He was Springfield’s top finisher in two events as he posted a pair of NCAA qualifying marks. He placed second in the one-meter dive with a total score of 535.9, and also placed third in the three-meter board with a total score of 503.10.

With help from Sobel, the Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team placed fourth out of six teams with a total score of 630.5 points.

The Springfield College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team next compete on January 8 when they take on Union and Hartwick at home at the Art Linkletter Natatorium at 1:00 pm.
