Cole Shuts Down Williams as Baseball Wins, 3-0

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 2, 2008) -Sophomore Michael Cole (Greenfield, Mass.) pitched a gem for the Springfield College Pride as he allowed just two hits and no runs, while striking out ten batters in seven-plus innings of work as Springfield defeated Williams 3-0 at Berry-Allen field on Wednesday.

With the win, the Pride moves to 6-11 on the year, while the Ephs drop to 12-5

After a lead-off walk to start the game, Cole retired the next 14 Ephs he faced, recording six of his 10 strikeouts in that span. He walked the next batter, but promptly recorded his seventh punchout to end the top of the sixth inning.

Cole’s bid for a no-hitter ended in the top of the seventh inning as he allowed back to back hits to center fielder Max Pinto and the designated hitter, Taylor Mikell. With runners at second and third for the Ephs, Springfield’s shortstop Jamie Mackie (Springfield, Mass.) denied Williams the first run of the game as he made a diving stop and threw from his knees to get Pinto out at home.

Springfield did its damage at the plate in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Joe Kropa (Cranford, N.J.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Kropa then advanced to third on an error by Burgdorf on a failed pick-off attempt, and Mackie was then hit by a pitch. Following a wild pitch, Kropa crossed the plate for the Pride’s first run, while Mackie advanced to second. Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.) reached on a fielding error by the Williams third baseman and then stole his third bag of the game to put two runners in scoring position. Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) didn’t disappoint as he cracked a two-RBI single to give the Pride a 3-0 advantage.

Williams tried to rally in the top of the eighth, loading the bases and chasing Cole from the game after an outstanding seven-plus innings on the mound. Freshman Mario Piscitelli (Greenlawn, N.Y.) came in in a pressure situation and got pinch hitter Ryan Webster to fly out to center.

Piscitelli closed the door on the Ephs in the ninth to pick up his first save of the year. Cole improved his record to 1-1 on the season, while the loss runs William’s pitcher Paul Burgdorf’s record to 1-2.

Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) went 2-for-4 to lead Springfield at the plate, while Cone added his two-RBI.

Springfield returns to action on Thursday afternoon when it travels to take on Clark in a NEWMAC single game at 3:00 pm.
