Springfield Mass. – November 15, 2008 – The Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team picked up a narrow victory as they defeated the University of Rhode Island, 160-140, in a meet held at the Art Linkletter Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.
Once again leading the way for the Pride was freshman standout Brian Way (Beachwood, N.J.) who continues to have a tremendous first season in the pool for Springfield. Way picked up wins in the 200 butterfly (1:59.99), 100 butterfly (54.28) and finished second in the 200 I.M. (2:02.95). He was also part of the 200 medley relay which picked up another victory along with teammates Scott Mackstutis (Torrington, Conn.), Ryan Mackstutis (Torrington, Conn.), and Greg Pearsall (Litchfield, Conn.).
In the diving competition sophomore Brian Sobel (Stratford, Conn.) had another outstanding day as he once again swept the diving competition. Sobel scored a 285.52 in the one meter competition and followed that up by posting a score of 281.55 on the three meter diving board.
Andrew Blakesley (West Springfield, Mass.) also had another exceptional meet for the Pride as he won both the 200 freestyle (1:45.87) and the 100 freestyle (48.41). Teammate Ryan Mackstutis (Torrington, Conn.) placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.14) and touched second in the 200 breast (2:18.24).
Springfield men’s swimming will return to action next Saturday November 22 when they travel to Wheaton.
