Evans Qualifies to Compete in All-Around at Friday's NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships

Ty Evans West Point, N.Y. -- April 15, 2010 -- Ty Evans of Springfield College has advanced to compete at Friday's 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Gymnastics Championships at the Holleder Center on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy. He is the first SC gymnast to make it this far at the Division I NCAA's since 2002.

A total of six different Springfield College gymnasts competed in several events on Friday, but only Evans, a sophomore from (San Jose, Calif.) advanced in the all-around. His all-around score of 81.350 was actually fifth best in his session on the day, but the top two were competitors from a school whose entire team had reached the finals. They included Brandon Wynn (86.150) and Tai Lee (85.150) of Ohio State. The next three individuals were allowed to advance. They included Andrew Stover of Illinois-Chicago (83.550), Derek Gygax of William & Mary (81.650), and Evans.

The last gymnast to advance this far at the Division I level at the NCAA's from Springfield College was Josh Chasse in the still rings in 2002. Chasse was the ECAC champion in that event that season.

Evans had the following finishes and scores in this year's all-around. He placed 16th in the high bar (13.850), tied for 19th in the vault (15.450), 31st in the parallel bars (13.250), 33rd in the floor exercise (13.750), tied for 34th in the pommel horse (12.100), and 36th in the still rings (12.950).

Others who competed for Springfield in this year's events included junior Josh Fox (Ellicott City, Md.) who placed tied for 28th in the vault (15.100), tied for 30th in the pommel horse (12.350), and 36th in the floor (13.550).

Freshman Jimmy Pezzino (Buffalo, N.Y.) competed in two events, finishing 38th in the floor (13.300) and 40th in the vault (14.300). Senior Josh Spencer (Las Vegas, Nev.) tied for 23rd in the high bar (13.400). Senior co-captain Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.) placed 24th in the pommel horse (12.700), and senior co-captain Kyle Bartgis (Nottingham, Md.) tied for 38th in the parallel bars (11.600). The last three individuals were competing for the final time in a Springfield College uniform.
