Second-Half Rally Falls Short As MIT Upends Men's Soccer, 2-1

Ryan Malone Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – September 18, 2010 - Despite a furious second-half rally, the Springfield College men's soccer team could not overcome a 2-0 defecit as it dropped its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener to MIT, 2-1, on Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday afternoon.

MIT improves to 6-2, 1-0 in league action, while the Pride lost its second-straight contest to fall to 4-2, 0-1.

The Engineers jumped on the board first in the 22nd minute as their constant offensive pressure to start the contest finally paid off. On his sixth corner kick of the opening 20 minutes of play, Christian Therkelson sent a dangerous bending ball into the box. Ben Lewis used all of his 6-4 frame to rise above the Springfield defense to head home the MIT's first tally into left corner of the net.

MIT added to its lead as it struck 11 minutes into the second half. Matthew Monheit broke free inside the 18 and let loose a shot that Springfield goalie Chris Walton deflected away. However, Monheit, followed up his shot and slipped home the rebound to give the visitors a 2-0 edge.

Springfield finally found the back of the net in the 65th minute on Ryan Malone’s third goal of the season. After Jae Tracey was fouled outside of the box, Malone calmly tucked home a free kick from 25 yards out just inside the right post to make it a 2-1 contest.

The Pride continued to push forward as Malone had a pair of promising chances late in the second half, but neither attempt materialized into a Springfield goal.

For the contest MIT owned a 16-12 advantage in shots and took eight corner kicks, while the Pride earned just four.

Walton posted seven saves in the loss, while Dylan Rankin earned the win as he made three saves.

Springfield continues its four-game homestand on Thursday evening when it hosts Endicott in a non-conference clash at 7:00 pm
