Baseball Defeats Westfield State, 7-2, Behind White's First Career Victory

Box Score/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. -- April 2, 2007 – Freshman starter Ryan White (Colchester, Conn.) threw four scoreless innings, giving up only one hit while striking out three, this afternoon to earn the victory as the Springfield College baseball team defeated visiting Westfield State, 7-2, at SC’s Berry-Allen Field.

Now 1-0, White notched the first win of his career as a member of the Pride. Springfield raised its overall record to 3-13, while Westfield State dropped to 5-8.

The scoring for the Pride started in the second inning off WSC freshman starter Dave Glass (Pittsfield, Mass) when SC sophomore catcher Luke Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) got an RBI groundout to the shortstop which scored senior DH Jeff Hewes (Groton, Conn.). Springfield scored twice in the third when junior SS Tim Romeo (Whitesboro, N.Y.) laced a two-out, two-run single, scoring both freshman 2B Joey Kropa (Cranford, N.J.) and senior CF Kyle Pearce (Scotia, N.Y.).

In the fourth inning, with runners on first and third, the Pride scored two unearned runs when Westfield State’s center fielder dropped a fairly routine fly ball that would have been the third out. Then in the fifth inning, Springfield wrapped up its scoring when junior 3B Ryan Hingston (Windsor, Vt.) hit into a fielders choice which scored Romeo. That was followed by a sacrifice fly by Pearce, scoring junior 1B Casey Federico (Agawam, Mass.). Six of SC’s seven runs were unearned.

Westfield State scored both its runs off senior hurler Greg Matthews (Fanwood, N.J.). In the seventh, freshman 2B Ben Wagner (Cumberland, R.I.) singled in sophomore catcher Adam Franke (Monson, Mass.). In the eighth, freshman Patrick Morrissey (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

Sophomore Drew Michael (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior Rex Cone (Bristol, Conn.) also pitched for the Pride. Michael pitched the fifth and the sixth innings, giving up no runs, and one hit while striking out two. Cone pitched the ninth, surrendering no runs and no hits.

Springfield is next in action Wednesday April 4 at Williams College at 4:15 p.m.
