Women's Soccer Upends Westfield State, 5-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 8, 2005 – Springfield College junior midfielder Michelle Bongiovanni (West Springfield, Mass.) scored in the 18th minute of play as the Pride downed Westfield State College, 5-0, in a women’s soccer match on Thursday evening, September 8th. The goal was Bongiovanni’s third in as many games and came off of a perfect, 18-yard blast to give SC a lead it would never surrender.

In the 34th minute of action (33:10), the Pride added to its lead as sophomore forward Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I.) netted a well-placed cross from sophomore forward Christine Turbitt (East Providence, R.I.). Springfield took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

In the second stanza, the Pride (2-0-1) enjoyed scores from junior forward Annemarie Goodwin (Springfield, Mass.), junior midfielder Cari Capodiece (Berlin, Conn.) and freshman midfielder Jenn McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y.).

Westfield State (0-1) junior keeper Jenny Cyr made five saves in goal for the Owls.

After a three-game home stand to open the season, SC will now play its next four matches on the road. The Pride will travel to MCLA for a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon, September 13, at 4:00 p.m.
