Men's Track & Field Finishes 2nd, Women 3rd at the NEWMAC Championships; Headley Named NEWMAC Rookie of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – April 29, 2007 – The Springfield College men’s and women’s track and field teams both performed well at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Track & Field Championships held at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The men finished second of six scoring teams, while the women finished third of eight scoring teams.

Team scores on the men’s side were MIT 247, Springfield 210, Coast Guard 162, WPI 92, Wheaton 32, and Babson 16.

Team scores on the women’s side were MIT 215.50, Wheaton 178.50, Springfield 140, Smith 65, Mount Holyoke 60, Coast Guard 59, WPI 38, and Babson 16.

As a result of the Championships and because of his year-long achievements, freshman sprinter Steve Headley (Wilbraham, Mass.) of Springfield College was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in men’s track & field. Headley was also named First Team All-Conference for finishing first in the 100 meter dash (11.21 seconds), and Second Team All-Conference for finishing second in the 200 (22.26).

Headley was one of 15 different SC student-athletes on the men’s side to receive a total of 20 All-Conference first or second team honors. On the women’s side, SC had six different student-athletes receive a total of nine All-Conference first or second team honors.

Head Coach Ken Klatka

Ken Klatka Ken Klatka, an associate professor of physical education at Springfield College, will enter his 38th season as head coach, and 44th as a coach overall, of the men’s track and field program in 2013-2014. He ranks among the nation’s most successful coaches, with an overall record of 447 wins, 156 losses, and two ties for an impressive .743 winning percentage.
