Senior Meg Young Finishes Third at NCAA Cross Country Regionals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., November 12, 2005 – Owen Kiely of Wesleyan University and Caroline Cretti of Williams College each won the NCAA Division III New England Regional Cross Country Championships today at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield, Mass. hosted by Springfield College.

Kiely covered the five-mile course in 25:01 to win the title in the 50 degree, clear, conditions. Kiely outdistanced Neal Holtschulte of Williams by nine seconds. Josh Kennedy (Tufts) took third in a time of 25:23, followed by Dan Johnson (Bates) (25:26) and Joseph Hegarty (Keene State) (25:27). The following athletes will also advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday, November 19, in Delaware, Ohio hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University: Stephen Willis (Williams) (6th place, 25:28), Tomas Morrissey (Amherst) (7th, 25:30), Mike Flint (US Coast Guard) (10th, 25:21), James Butcher (Middlebury) (12th, 26:02), and Avery Bouchard (Bridgewater State) (14th, 26:04).

Keily led Wesleyan University to a second place overall finish and enabled Wesleyan to qualify for the national championships. Tufts University defended their title successfully as the Jumbos scored 62 points to win the championship. Wesleyan scored 118 points and Keene State tallied 132 points for third place. All three schools advance to the National Championships next week.

On the women’s side Cretti covered the six-kilometer course in 21:30 to lead Williams College to a first place finish and a berth in the National Championships next week. At the two mile mark Cretti began to open up her lead on Jennifer Adams of Keene State and Meg Young of Springfield College. Cretti continued to open up the gap and won the championship by twelve seconds over Adams. Young took third place in a time of 21:44, followed by Michelle Rorke (Williams) (21:45), and Jessica Minty of Colby College took fifth in a time of 21:50. Along with Adams and Young, Ellen Davis (Wesleyan) (7th place, 21:51), Nora Youngs (Smith College) (16th, 22:32), and Tracey Bassett (Wellesley College) (20th, 22:41) also advanced to the National Championships next week.

Williams (the defending national champions) won the meet with 48 points. Colby took second (81 points), followed by Amherst College (88), Middlebury College (129), and Tufts (145). All five schools will advance to the National Championships next week in Delaware, Ohio.
