Men's Lacrosse Downs Wheaton College, 14-7, in Pilgrim League Semifinals

Boxscore/Play-by-Play

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 3, 2006 – Springfield College senior attacker Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) led the second-seeded Pride with two goals and two assists (four points) as SC defeated No. 3 Wheaton College, 14-7, in the semifinal round of the 2006 Pilgrim Lacrosse League Tournament this afternoon at a rainy Benedum Field.

With the win, the Pride improves to 12-4 on the season as it has now won seven consecutive games and 10 of its past 11 overall. The Lyons fall to 8-6-1 on the year. SC will next face top-seeded Western New England College (WNEC) on Saturday afternoon, May 6th, in a 12:00 p.m. start for the Pilgrim League Tournament title. WNEC advanced to the championship by beating No. 4 Babson College, 18-8.

The Pride jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with 11:07 left in the first quarter, as junior Paul Voegeli (Cheshire, Conn.), freshman Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.), and sophomore Steve Krasco (Medford, Mass.) netted the first three SC scores. Wheaton then came back with two Ellis Reavey goals to cut the lead to just one (3-2). The Pride then scored three of the next four goals to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter.

The second stanza featured just two goals, as SC freshman midfielder Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) scored early in the second, with 14:33 left, and then the Lyons scored with just one second remaining in the half on a goal from senior attacker Adam Cohen. With just the two scores in the second, the Pride went into the break with a 7-4 advantage.

In the third quarter, Wheaton cut the SC lead to 8-6 with 10:56 remaining on another Reavey goal, but that was as close as the Lyons would get, as the Pride ran off four-straight scores to take complete control of the contest. When all was said and done, SC came away with a victory and a berth into the Pilgrim League Final.

Freshman attacker Pat Cavanaugh (Wayland, Mass.), Brown, Beebe, Jones, and Voegeli all scored two goals apiece in the win. Junior midfielder Tom Santagato (Queens, N.Y.) chipped in with two assists on the afternoon. Junior goalkeeper Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) stopped 21 Wheaton shots on goal during the game.

The Lyons were led by Reavey with three goals. Senior midfielder John Sharry added two goals, and sophomore keeper Jeremy Beech made 21 saves.
