WPI Topples Men's Soccer, 3-0

Worcester, Mass. - October 22, 2011 - The Springfield College men's soccer team wrapped up its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Confernce (NEWMAC) regular season play on Saturday as it dropped a 3-0 decision to WPI on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, WPI moves to 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in NEWMAC play while Springfield, tied for eighth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New England poll, falls to 8-4-3 overall and 4-2 in conference action.

Both teams are in the hunt for quarterfinal byes in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. Babson clinched the regular season title and top seed with a 2-1 overtime win over Wheaton so WPI, Springfield and Wheaton all are in the mix for the other two remaining bye. WPI (nine points) is at Coast Guard next Saturday while Wheaton (nine points) hosts MIT. Springfield has concluded conference play with 12 points.

Back Ryan Mocadlogot WPI an early lead when he headed home a Erin Crevoiserat corner kick just 6:19 into the match. The Crimson and Gray added to their advantage in the 17th minuteswhen Crevoiserat registered his fourth goal of the season when he knocked in his own rebound.

The offensive surge concluded late in the 38th minutes as Chris Ciampa potted his team-leading seventh goal when he headed a pass from Kevin Ducharme while diving over the Springfield goalkeeper.

The Pride furiously tried to rally in the second half, outshooting the Engineers 9-3 during the second stanza but WPI netminder Jeff Wong was equal to the task, recording six of his eight stops after intermission, including a brilliant sprawling save with just over two minutes remaining to preserve his sixth career.

Springfield goalkeeper Brett Bascom made a pair of saves for the Pride.

Springfield ended the game with a 13-11 edge in shots but WPI owned a slight 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Springfield closes out its regular season slate with a home match versus Western Connecticut on Wednesday at 7 pm.
