Avdoulos Selected as NEWMAC Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year

Pete Avdoulos Boston, Mass. -- February 26, 2014 -- For the third-straight season, Springfield College diving coach Pete Avdoulos was named both the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's and Women's Diving Coach of the Year.

This marks the fifth-time since 2003 that Avdoulos has swept the NEWMAC Diving Coach of the Year honors. On the men's side, Avdoulos has been named NEWMAC Coach of the Year 11 of the last 12 seasons, including the last seven years. For the women, he has been chosen as the top coach six times in the last 12 seasons.

Springfield swept the Diver of the Year awards at the NEWMAC Championship, as Jen Thompson (Cheshire, Conn.) was recognized for the second year in a row, while teammate Jack Lewis (Durham, N.H.) won for the first time on the men’s side. The Pride captured six out of eight diving all-conference accolades as Thompson and Lewis both swept all-conference first team honors on the one and three meter boards. Springfield also posted a total of 21 national qualifying scores throughout the weekend between the men's and women's teams.

In his 29th season season at Springfield, Avdoulos coached a Springfield diving team that put on a dominant performance at last weekend's NEWMAC Championship. Lewis became the sixth-straight Springfield male diver to earn NEWMAC Men's Diver of the Year while Thompson's back-to-back NEWMAC Women's Diver of the Year awards are the only two since 2004.

Avdoulos gives much of the credit to his second-year assistant coach Kimi Schmidt. A 2012 Westfield State University graduate, Schmidt currently holds six school records at Westfield State. She was an eight-time New England champion, winning the one-meter and three-meter boards in all four years and was named Diver of the Meet four times.

"She has been instrumental to the success of this team," Avdoulos explained. "If I could, I would give the Coach of the Year awards to her."

Springfield divers have also excelled outside of the pool as the women achieved a combined GPA of over 3.8 this fall.
