Box Score

Worcester, Mass. -- (October 23, 2007) -- Shanda Kogut (Preston, Conn.) netted a pair of goals as visiting Springfield College shutout WPI, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women’s soccer action on Tuesday evening at WPI's Alumni Field.

With the win the Pride, ranked 4th in the latest NSCAA New England regional rankings, improves to 15-2 overall, and 8-1 in conference play. Winners of six straight and 11 of its last 12, Springfield established a new school regular-season record for wins in a season besting the old mark of 14 set during the 2005 campaign. WPI drops to 7-10 on the season and 3-6 in NEWMAC action.

Kogut tallied the lone goal of the first half when she knocked home a pass from Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, Conn.) in the sixth minute.

The match would remain 1-0 until Jillian Pereira’s (East Providence, R.I.) long free kick in the 52nd minute found the head of Katie Gates (Amherst, Mass.), who buried it into in the back net for her first marker of the season. Kogut closed out the scoring in the 85th minute when she finished a feed from Brittney Collins (South Windsor, Conn.) for her fourth goal of the year.

Springfield goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) stopped one shot en route to posting the Pride’s 13th shutout of 2007. WPI netminder Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham, Mass.) was stellar in net, recording nine saves on the night for the Engineers.

The match marked the final NEWMAC regular season contest for both squads. The teams will now turn their attention to the NEWMAC Tournament which begins with first round action on Saturday afternoon. Second-seeded Springfield will host seventh-seeded Wellesley, while eighth-seeded WPI travels to top-seeded and nationally-ranked Wheaton.
