Springfield, Mass. - September 6, 2009 - Despite a tremendous performance between the pipes from freshman Chris Walton, the Springfield College men's soccer team fell to rival Western New England, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the championship match of the Soccer City Shootout.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 1-1 on the season while WNEC improves to 2-0.
Walton kept the Pride in the game throughout with his steady play in goal as he recorded eight saves after posting his first career shutout in Saturday's 3-0 win over Husson. For his efforts, the first year was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Another steady performer on the weekend was James Ashcroft, who was awarded the Tournament's Offensive MVP after tallying a goal and adding an assist in Saturday's victory.
The Pride battled with the hosts to a scoreless draw for nearly all of regulation until John Parson scored the game-winner with 3:31 remaining to give WNEC the only goal of the contest.
Springfield had a terrific scoring opportunity midway through the second half when John Plourd snuck behind the WNEC backline and nearly snuck a ball into the goal, but his attempt went just to the right of the goal.
