Wenham, Mass. - February 23, 2011 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team opened up the 2011 campaign with a 12-6 win at Gordon College at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
For the second-straight season, Springfield bested Gordon in its season-opener as the Pride improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Scots drop to 0-1.
The Pride jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Mike Delia and Parker Geane. A goal by Dan Utz made it 2-1 at the end of the first period.
In the second period, Utz scored again at the 10:44 mark to knot the score at 2-2. However, the Pride seized momentum as Ryan Murphy and Geane gave Springfield a 4-2 lead. After Utz notched his third goal, Springfield poured in three consecutive goals to close out the half, going into the break ahead 7-3. Springfield used strikes from Jarrid Johnson and Kyle Louer before Geane added an unassisted marker with 3:15 left in the opening half.
In the third period, Springfield opened the lead further as Shawn Runyon and Shane Ferguson scored within six seconds of each other to give the Pride a 9-3 advantage. Ferguson had a big second half as he scored three times.
Springfield carried a 10-5 advantage into the fourth period. After Zac Blue cut the Gordon deficit to 10-6, the Pride scored the last two goals of the game, ending on an unassisted tallly from Delia.
In his first collegiate start, Connor Nash earned the victory as he posted four saves in the opening 30 minutes of play. Rob Maher played the final 30 minutes of action and registered six stops in the cage. Each Springfield goalie surrendered three goals in their college debuts. Their counterpart, Houston Zemanski had 11 stops. Springfield outshot Gordon 38-20 overall.
Ferguson finished with a team-best four points on three goals and an assist, while Geane netted a hat trick. All-American Mark Eaton dominated the "x", winning 14-of-22 draws to go along with seven ground balls and three assists out of the midfield. Vinny Senatore also scooped up four ground balls for the Pride.
Springfield will play its home opener on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm against Nazareth, who was ranked 17th in the country in the USILA Preseason National Poll.
