Springfield to Send Nine Individuals to the NCGA Women's Gymnastics Nationals

Alex Ploenes SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- March 16, 2008 -- The Springfield College women's gymnastics team will be sending a lofty figure of nine individuals to the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Division III Nationals at SUNY Cortland on March 28-29.

Yesterday, Springfield College hosted the ECAC Division III Women's Gymnastics Championships. The top three teams advanced automatically to the NCGA's. They were #2-ranked Ursinus with a score of 187.675, #1-ranked Brockport at 187.175, and #6-ranked Cortland at 186.750. By finishing fourth with a score of 185.875, #5-ranked Springfield just missed advancing as a team.

But the Pride will be sending nine individuals to that competition as individuals. They are:
junior Penelope Bohunko (Wilkes Barre, Pa.) in the beam;
sophomore Jeanna Bradle (New Milford, Conn.) in the vault, bars, and floor;
sophomore Ericca Castagna (Topsfield, Mass.) in the vault and floor;
sophomore Brittany Davis (Shelby, N.C.) in the vault and beam;
sophomore Kayleigh Davis (Whitefield, N.H.) in the floor;
junior Jacqueline Mazzola (Framingham, Mass.) in the vault;
freshman Ashley Moreck (Berlin, Md.) in the bars;
sophomore Alexandra Ploenes (Medina, Ohio) in the all-around; and
junior Jenna Williams (Townsend, Mass.) in the vault and bars.

In one of several major awards announced yesterday by the ECAC, Springfield College's Jillian Silverman was named a 2008 ECAC Division III Co-Assistant Coach of the Year, along with Susie Taylor of Rhode Island College.

In another note, Springfield's score of 47.725 on vault yesterday was a school record on that particular apparatus, A total of six of Springfield's nine competitors will be competing at the nationals in vault. Four will be competing in the floor exercise, four on the uneven parallel bars, and three on the balance beam. That includes one in the all-around.
