Pitching Leads Baseball to Sweep Over Macalester in Season-Opener

Mark Grant Phoenix, Ariz. - March 13, 2011 - The Springfield College baseball team rode a pair of outstanding pitching performances to sweep Macalester in its first two games of the 2011 season at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational on Sunday. The Pride took the first game 2-0, but cruising to an 8-1 win in the nightcap.

In its opener, Springfield was led by its ace, Steve Forbes, who threw a complete game shutout. Forbes tossed seven innings of five-hit ball, striking out two and walking just one. The Pride benefited from a two-run single by sophomore Kyle DiFranco in the opening inning for the only runs it would need. Both teams finished with five hits in the contest.

In the second game, Mark Grant also went the distance, hurling seven innings while allowing just three hits and one unearned run. The senior also struck out two and walked a pair.

Mike Robilotto provided an offensive spark as he recorded a pair of triples in the contest, while DiFranco knocked in a pair of runs. The Pride trailed 1-0 after the first inning but plated two runs in the fifth before three runs in both the sixth and seventh to complete the 8-1 win.
