World Series Athletic Trainers to Tell Their Stories At Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 18, 2004 -- Jim Rowe, head athletic trainer of the Boston Red Sox, and Barry Weinberg, head athletic trainer for the St. Louis Cardinals.do not only oversee the health care for the two baseball teams that reached World Series in October; they are also graduates of Springfield College.

These two highly respected professionals will hold an open forum for the SC community on Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2004, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Marsh Memorial Building at Springfield College. They will answer questions ranging from their lives in Major LeagueBaseball to medical issues in the sport

Weinberg is a native of Silver Spring, Md., and a 1973 graduate of Springfield College. He has been with manager Tony LaRussa since his days with the Oakland Athletics, including The Bash Brothers’ American League championship teams of the late ‘80 and early ‘90s. He left Oakland to join the Cardinals in 1997, the same year his close friend, Mark McGwire, was traded to St. Louis. Weinberg served as an assistant athletic trainer for the Yankees before accepting the position of head trainer with the A’s in 1981. Hewas an outfielder on the Springfield baseball team from 1971 to 1973. He helped the team compile a 51-28 record and reach the NCAA Division II Tournament three times.

Rowe gained visibility as one of the people Curt Schilling credited with his remarkable comeback from an ankle injury in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series.Rowe is originally from Dover, N.H., and is a 1987 graduate of Springfield College.He has been the head athletic trainer of the Red Sox since 1997.

Springfield College is the only institution in the country to have three alumni serving as head athletic trainers of Major League Baseball franchises. Dave LaBossiere, class of 1974, is the head athletic trainer for the Houston Astros.
