Clapp Runs To Second At New Englands
, Oct. 10, 2003 -- Springfield College senior All-American Marisa Clapp (Charlton, Mass.)
finished second at the New England Women’s Collegiate Cross Country Championships held this afternoon at Franklin Park in Boston.
Clapp, who covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:45, recorded the best finish and time ever by an SC runner at the New England Championships, which features college runners from Divisions I, II and III. Amherst College freshman Aly Venti won the event.
The Pride placed 28th in the 50-team field.
Clapp, a five-time All-American in cross-country and track & field, was coming off wins at the Amherst Invitational (Sept. 6), the Middlebury Invitational (Sept. 13), the UMass-Dartmouth Shriners’ Classic (Sept. 20) and Trinity College’s Bantam Invitational (Sept. 27). The two-time New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Runner of the Year will defend her conference crown on Sat., Nov. 1 in Worcester, Mass.

Jim Pennington enters his 29th season as head coach of the Springfield College women’s cross country and track and field teams in 2013. Under Pennington’s direction, the Pride has recorded seven top 20 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and seven top 15 finishes at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
