The pair advanced to the national meet after placing in the top three of their respective weight classes at the NCAA Northeast Regionals last weekend. For both Foley and Hamrick, this marks the first time in their collegiate careers that they have reached the national level.
At 149, Hamrick will take on Rochester Institute of Technology's Brad Mayville (32-7) with the winner advancing to wrestling eighth-seeded Luke Lohr (29-6) of Waynesburg. Hamrick boasts a record of 24-3 this season and he finished second at the regional championship last weekend.
In the 165 weight class, Foley will wrestle Concordia-Moorhead's Jake Krogstad (20-9) in the first round of action. The winner will then square off with fifth-seeded Nicholas Carr (9-0) of Washington and Jefferson. Carr, a transfer from Seton Hill, has won all nine of his matches against wrestlers from his own region. Foley holds a record of 38-6 this season and finished third at the Northeast Regionals last weekend.
At last year's national championship, the Pride sent six wrestlers and produced three All-Americans, including 157 pound national champion Devin Biscaha. Joe Grippi and Derek Adams both earned All-America honors. As a team, Springfield finished 8th out of 64 teams represented in the competition with 42 points, the highest team finish for the Pride since the 1998 team took seventh.
