Men's Tennis Defeats Babson, 5-4; Claims No. 2 Seed at NEWMAC's

Rahul Bala SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- April 19, 2008 -- Senior Joe Lisi outlasted Ben Edick at No. 2 singles, allowing the Springfield College men's tennis team to defeat Babson College, 5-4, in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match this afternoon at Springfield's Appleton Courts.

The win upped Springfield's record to 7-5 overall, and 4-1 in the NEWMAC. Babson fell to 9-10 overall, and 3-2 in the NEWMAC. As the #2 seed, Springfield thus receives a first-round bye in next week's NEWMAC post-season tourney. Babson will be the #3 seed and must host a first-round match next Thursday. Babson will be the favorite, thus setting up a potential rematch of these same two teams in the NEWMAC semis next Saturday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. MIT, at 5-0 in NEWMAC play, will be the #1 seed.

Springfield took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. SC won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles by slim margins.

The Pride then eventually took a 4-3 lead, winning at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Senior Rahul Bala (Enfield, Conn.) defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3. And sophomore Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, N.Y.) won his match at No. 4, 6-4, 6-1.

But Babson, which had battled back all day, did so again. Down a set, Beavers sophomore Edwin Lee (Mukilteo, Wash.) defeated Pride sophomore Tim Tunis (Sudbury, Mass.), 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. And that tied it up at 4-all.

So, it all came down to No. 2 singles. Lisi, who hails from Southbridge, Mass., was already up a set at this point, 7-6. He then managed to win the second set, 6-4, to wrap it up for the Pride.

"You could really call this senior day," said Springfield Head Coach Jamie Morrell. "Our two senior captains, Joe Lisi and Rahul Bala, really came through for us with big wins. Each came through for us in the clutch."

The match began with doubles.
