Women's Soccer Shuts Down Rhode Island College, 6-0

Katie Mantie Box Score

Springfield, Mass. -- September 7, 2011 -- Katie Mantie scored three goals and added an assist in the first half to lead the Springfield College women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over visiting Rhode Island College on a rainy Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield moves to 2-1 on the season, while the Anchorwomen drop their first game of the season to fall to 2-1.

The Pride had their way much of the game, outshooting the visitors 26-2 and taking all 13 of the game's corner kicks.

It didn’t take Springfield very long at all to net the opening goal of the contest as Mantie struck for her first goal of the night. Just 4:25 into the contest, Mantie slipped through the Anchorwomen defense and poked home a goal from eight yards out into the right corner of the net.

The Pride added another goal in the 12th minute off a Mantie corner kick. Mantie’s service from the left side found Erica Donnelly all alone, who calmly tucked in a header just inside the right post.

The hosts added to their lead in the 23rd minute on Mantie’s second marker of the game. After just checking into the game, Courtney Letourneau delivered a through ball from the middle of the field, which Mantie ran onto and slipped home another tally.

Mantie struck again just before the half in similar fashion as she finished off her hat trick. This time, Jenelle Jahoda provided the assist as Mantie held off a defender and scored from 10 yards out with 2:13 remaining.

With 10 new field players seeing action to start the second half, the Pride continued to pour on the offensive pressure. In the 52nd minute, Kim Rasmussen scored to give the Pride a 5-0 cushion, before striking again in the 70th minute after a brilliant move inside the box to get free.

Erin Greenstein recorded her second shutout victory of the season, needing just one save to do so. Abygayle Fisher was one of three keepers to play for Rhode Island College and was credited with the loss as she gave up five goals while making six saves in just over 65 minutes of action.

Springfield will play next on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Brandeis at 2:30 pm.
