Baseball Earns ECAC Tournament Bid

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 4, 2004 – Springfield College is the No. 6 seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Baseball Tournament.

This is SC’s fifth ECAC Tournament appearance since 1998. The Pride won the ECAC Championship in 1999.

The eight-team, single-elimination tournament begins Friday, May 7 as the Pride (14-11) travels to No. 3 Eastern Nazarene, which is located in Quincy, Mass., at 3:30 p.m. The winner advances to play either No. 2 Salve Regina or No.7 Salem State in Saturday’s semifinal round. In the other first-round match-ups, top-seed Johnson & Wales takes on No. 8 WPI, and No. 4 Brandeis and No. 5 Nichols square off.

After a 3-8 start, the Pride has won 11 of its last 14, including seven straight from April 12-22, its longest-winning streak in five seasons. SC has wins over fourth-ranked Eastern Connecticut (8-7 on April 16), Williams (7-5 on April 20), which has been ranked in the region’s top-3 for most of the season, and 10th-ranked Trinity (10-9 in 13 innings on April 27).

The Pride reached the championship game of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, but lost to Babson, 8-3. SC eliminated top-seed Wheaton, 10-6, to reach the final.
