No. 13 SUNY Cortland Edges No. 16 Wrestling, 16-15

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., January 10, 2006 – Springfield College junior Erik Delehanty (Clinton, Conn.) won his 157-pound division match over Cortland State sophomore Eric Sciutto to put SC up 12-3 at the time, but it was the No. 13 Red Dragons which defeated the No. 17 Pride in come-from-behind fashion on Tuesday afternoon, January 10, in a tri-meet with Western New England College at Blake Arena.

In other dual action this afternoon, SUNY Cortland defeated WNEC by a score of 37-9, and in the final dual of the day, the Pride downed the Golden Bears, 40-6. With the split, SC is now 2-2 on the season in dual competition. Cortland St. improves to 6-1, and WNEC falls to 2-7 overall.

SC built an early 12-3 lead in its match with Cortland as senior Pete Marques (Massapequa, N.Y.), and juniors Mike Gaeta (Manalapan, N.J.), Mark DeCiccio (Cranston, R.I.) and Delehanty all won their respective matches for the Pride.

Cortland State came roaring back, however, as the Red Dragons won four matches in a row to take a 16-12 lead. Junior Stef Sair earned Cortland St. four team points with a 12-3 victory at 174 pounds. With SC down 16-12 heading into the final match at 285 pounds, junior Phil McGeough (Clifton Park, N.Y.) won a 2-0 decision to make the final score 16-15 in favor of SUNY Cortland.

Coupled with the Pride’s dual match against Western New England, SC had four double-winners on the afternoon, in Pete Marques, Mike Gaeta, Erik Delehanty and Phil McGeough.
