SPRINGFIELD, Mass., October 6, 2006 – Henry Ruggerio and Colin Cook tallied goals to lead the Springfield College men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Clark University in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest this evening at SC’s Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield raised its record to 4-7-2 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC competition. Clark suffered its second straight loss and is now 8-2-1 on the season overall and 3-1 in the conference.
The Cougars had the better of it over the first 15 minutes or so, but it was Springfield that broke through first. Junior forward Tony Distasio (Burlington, Conn.), who was coming off a great game two nights ago (one goal and two assists in a 3-1 win over Bridgewater State), perfectly placed a corner kick to junior back Henry Ruggerio (Stow, Mass.), who was cutting to the near post. Ruggerio deflected the ball low and to the short side, beating Clark senior goalkeeper Matt Talbot. The tally came in the 29th minute of the match (28:09).
Just 3:13 into the second half (48:13), freshman forward Adrian Schippers (Ashby, Mass.) made a nice cross in front of the net to a waiting Colin Cook (Wilbraham, Mass.). The junior forward did not make a mistake in beating Talbot, who had no chance.
Talbot had six saves on the evening, while Springfield junior goalkeeper Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, Del.) was credited with just one save and his third shutout. In terms of shots one goal, Springfield beat Clark 8-1.
Springfield and Clark both return to action next Wednesday. Springfield hosts Williams College at 7:00 p.m., while Clark hosts Colby-Sawyer in Worcester at 6:00 p.m.
