Just nine days ago, Springfield defeated Wesleyan (19-15) in their only head-to-head confrontation this season. But two days ago, in a tri-meet in Providence, Springfield was upset by Johnson & Wales, 24-19. Earlier in the day, SC had beaten Plymouth State (42-3), avenging an earlier season defeat.
The loss to Johnson & Wales cost SC the season's No. 1 ranking.
Wesleyan is currently 16-3-1 overall, and garnered nine first-place votes along with its 126 points. Springfield (12-6) was second with four first-place votes and 115 points. Only two of SC's six losses were to other New England Division III teams.
Johnson & Wales (14-6-1) jumped to third in the rankings with 104 points. In fourth was Williams College (10-8-1) with 90 points. Plymouth State (8-6) was sixth with 80 points.
In sixth through 10th were: Bridgewater State (10-8-1) with 69 points, Rhode Island College (11-10) with 44, Roger Williams (8-12) with 42, Trinity (8-7) with 22, and Coast Guard (1-15) with 18. The only other squad to receive votes was Southern Maine.
