Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- April 17, 2008 -In a game that featured 39 hits and 32 runs, the Springfield College baseball team grinded out an 18-14 victory over Coast Guard in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field.

The win, which clinches a spot in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament for the Pride, improves SC to 12-17, 4-6 in league play. The Bears drop to 6-18, 1-9.

In an offensive shootout, Ryan Hingston led the way for the Pride as he went 5-of-6, including three doubles.

Coast Guard scored the first run of the game in the top of the second after Kevin Higgins RBI single knocked home Ken Franklin. Franklin led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a stolen base, and advanced to third on a groundout to second by Brian Yurovich.

Hingston got the Pride started in the second inning as he laced a double down the left field line, and Drew Michael slapped a single up the middle to knot the game at one. The Pride went up 2-1 after John Schmaltz cracked a triple that rolled all the way to the fence in right field. Schmaltz then came around to score on Jamie Mackie’s double to left center. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Mackie to score and Luke Gabordi’s single up the middle plated two more for Springfield. Hingston’s single through the left side of the infield plated Gabordi as, when all was said and done, the Pride recorded seven runs off seven hits in the second stanza.

The Bears tacked on runs in the third and fourth inning to cut the Pride’s lead to four as Christian George and Adam Reckley each had RBI singles.

However, Springfield responded as Rex Cone crushed a triple to right field to lead off SC’s fourth inning. The Pride were able to manufacture three runs in the half inning, highlighted by Michael’s RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, Coast Guard tacked on four more runs to make it a 10-7 game. Franklin and Yurovich both crossed the plate on wild pitches, and Kevin Keefe had a two RBI single to lead the Bear charge in the fifth stanza.

The Pride added a run in the bottom half of the fifth on a Gabordi deep sac fly to right that plated Cone.

Coast Guard continued to chip away at the lead as it added two runs in the sixth inning to bring the score to 11-9. Kevin Higgins connected for an RBI single for the key hit in the inning for the Bears.

The Pride gave itself some cushion with three runs in the sixth to go up 14-9. Mackie started it off with his second RBI double of the game, while back-to-back RBI singles from Cone and Justin Nussey gave the Pride a five-run advantage.

As it had all game, Coast Guard would not go away, this time using a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh by Yurovich creep back into the game. With the bases loaded, Mike Searles struck out Lisko and Milligan to hold the Bears at bay.

The traded runs in the eighth, and the Bears tacked on two more in the ninth, but it was not enough as SC held on for the victory. Justin O'Brien picked up his first win of the season, while Searles recorded the save in 3.1 innings of work in relief.

Mackie, Tim Romeo, Cone, Hingston, and Michael all recorded at least three hits in the win.

For the Bears, Higgins finished 4 for 5, while Christian George went 3 for 7 with three RBI. Kevin Thomas shouldered the loss, as he allowed seven earned runs off eight hits in two innings of work.

The Pride return to action on Friday afternoon for a non-conference tilt with local rival Elms. First pitch is slated for 3:30 pm at Berry-Allen Field.
