Men's Soccer Upsets WPI In NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinals, 1-0
Nov. 7, 2002 - Springfield College freshman midfielder Zach Pereira (East Providence, R.I.)
scored with 3:46 remaining in the game to lead the sixth-seeded Pride to the 1-0 upset of third-seeded WPI in the first round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Soccer Tournament.
Pereira took a feed from junior back Eric Sudnik (Southampton, Mass.)
and netted the game-winner for Springfield (6-12-1), who avenged a 4-1 loss to the Engineers in Springfield during the regular season.
The Pride moves on to face second-seeded MIT on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at top-seeded Wheaton College. The day's other semifinal features the Lyons versus fourth-seeded Babson College in a 10:30 a.m. start. The two winners will play on Sunday, Nov. 10 for the NEWMAC Championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
