#4 Women's Gymnastics Edges #5 Ithaca, 184.500-183.850

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – February 4, 2007 – For the second straight week, Springfield’s Audrey Lastra won the all-around with a school-record score, allowing the #4-ranked Springfield College women’s gymnastics team to defeat #5-ranked Ithaca College, 184.500 to 183.850, Sunday afternoon at SC’s Blake Arena.

With the win, Springfield becomes 5-1, while Ithaca falls to 4-2. It was SC’s first win over Ithaca since 2004. SC is ranked #4 in the latest GymInfo statistics, while Ithaca is ranked #5.

“The whole team contributed to this win,” said SC Head Coach Cheryl Raymond, noting it was the team’s best score of the year. “Everyone played their part. I’m very pleased.”

Lastra, a freshman from New Milford, Conn., scored a school-record 37.575 in the all-around. Last week, Lastra scored a 37.475 in a victory over Rhode Island College. Prior to that, SC’s old all-around school mark had been 37.375, held by current senior Keriann Hart (Hanover, Mass.) in 2004.

In today’s meet, Lastra finished first on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.525. She also placed second on the vault with a score of 9.475, second on the floor exercise (9.600), and fifth on the balance beam (8.975).

Others for SC who placed first were sophomore Jackie Mazzola (Framingham, Mass.) in the vault (9.550), and freshman Alex Ploenes (Fletcher, N.C.) on the balance beam (9.475).

Ithaca’s top performer was senior Kelly Stevison (Manassas, Va.), who placed second in the all-around (36.750), and first in the floor exercise with the meet’s best individual score (9.650). Stevison also placed third in the vault (9.450).

Springfield had to pull this one out in the last event. The Pride was trailing by just over a point as it prepared for the floor exercise and Ithaca prepared for the balance beam. SC then scored 46.350 on the floor, while Ithaca tallied 44.475 on the beam. The difference allowed SC to win by just under a full point.

The Springfield women captured two events en route to the team victory. The Pride won the uneven parallel bars, 46.625 to 45.625. SC also won the balance beam, 45.725 to 44.475. The Bombers, meanwhile, won the vault, 46.600 to 45.800, and the floor exercise, 47.150 to 46.350.

SC had some good solid performances, going 1-2-3 on beam, and 1-2 on both the bars and vault. Ithaca went 3-4-5-6 on the vault, and 4-5-6 on the floor exercise.
