Springfield, Mass. --- December 4, 2010 -- The Springfield College women's track team opened its 2010-2011 season with a first-place finish in its own 5-Way Meet this afternoon in the Springfield College Field House. The Pride ended with 239.50 points, followed by Westfield State (133), Rhode Island College (75), WPI (70.50), and Eastern Connecticut State (33).
Several Springfield College individuals had great days. Junior Kelly Curtis (Princeton, N.J.) qualified for the New England Division III's in the long jump (16-09.75), the high jump (5-02.25), and the 55-meter hurdles (8.63). She also qualified for the ECAC Division III's in the high jump and the 55-meter hurdles.
In addition, Curtis qualified for the New England's and the ECAC's in the pentathlon. She scored 3128 points, which was very impressive.
Sophomore Laurie Jenkins (Columbia, Conn.) had a very good day by qualifying for the New England Division III's and the ECAC's in both the 55-meters (7.41) and the 200 meters (26.55).
In the 400 meters, three qualified for the New England Division III's. They were freshman Gabriella Gaudreault (Leominster, Mass.) (1:00.55), senior Katie Schumann (Cromwell, Conn.) (1:00.55), and senior Joy Jennifer (Columbia, Md.) (1:02.21).
Others who qualified for the New England Division III's included sophomore Crystal Davis (Hartford, Conn.) in the 55-meters (7.55), freshman Jennifer Kapinos (Agawam, Mass.) (1:42.65) in the 600, and senior Lacey Cartier (York, Maine) (2:22.86) in the 800. Three pole vaulters did the same. They were Schumann (9-00.25), sophomore Rhiann Duggan (Northboro, Mass.) (10-00.00), and senior Mia Salmeri (East Longmeadow, Mass.) (9-00.25).
Finally, the 4x200 meter reay team that ran a time of 1:48.34 also qualified for the New England's and the ECAC's. That team included Davis, Jenkins, freshman Samantha Artz (Milford, Conn.), and Gaudreault.
