MIT Tops Field Hockey, 4-1, In NEWMAC Championship Rematch

Lynne Donoghue Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - September 25, 2010 - The MIT field hockey team scored three second-half goals, leading to their eighth victory of the season in a 4-1 win over the Springfield at Stagg Field on Saturday morning in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) clash.

It marked the first time these two teams had played since MIT toppled Springfield in the NEWMAC Tournament Championship game a year ago, ending the Pride's five-year run as tournament champions. MIT moves to 8-1 overall (2-0 NEWMAC) while SC dropped its fourth-straight game to fall to 2-4 (0-1 NEWMAC).

The visitors got a first half goal from Katie Kaufmann after more than twenty minutes of back and forth between the two teams. Molly Duff found Kaufmann all alone in front of the Pride net, and the midfielder put it past Pride goalie Alison McCarthy to net the game's first strike.

McCarthy stopped five MIT shots in the first half, but was under constant pressure in the second half, leading to three more Engineer goals. The visitors went up 3-0 after a pair of Kimberly Barker goals found their way into the net. Barker scored her first at the 43:13 mark and added her second of the game just 7:09 later.

The Pride answered Barker’s second goal quickly, with Lynne Donoghue putting a Kelly Gallo assist past goalkeeper Keri Dixon to make it a 3-1 ballgame. But the visitors would not let the momentum swing, as forward Kameron Klauber, who tallied eight shots in the game, found the goal five minutes later to boost the Engineers’ lead back to three.

McCarthy stopped 10 shots in the second half, and 15 for the game, as Engineers outshot the Pride 23-13 overall. Dixon earned the win in goal as she posted seven saves for the visitors.

The Pride travel to Cortland, N.Y. for a Sunday afternoon game against Cortland State tomorrow at 1 pm.
