Springfield College's Erin Pac Earns a Bronze Medal in the Vancouver Winter Olympics Bobsledding Competition

Springfield College's Erin Pac Earns a Bronze Medal in the Vancouver Winter Olympics Bobsledding Competition Vancouver, British Columbia -- February 24, 2010 -- Springfield College graduate Erin Pac '03 (left in photo) has earned a bronze medal in women's bobsledding at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games of 2010.

Pac, a native of Farmington, Conn. and the driver for USA II, finished third after the completion of the third and fourth heats tonight at the Whistler Sliding Centre just north of Vancouver. Canada I, with driver Kaillie Humphries and brakeman Heather Moyse, won the gold with a combined time of 3:32.28.

In second place with a combined time of 3:33.13 was Canada II, which included driver Helen Upperton and brakeman Shelley-Ann Brown. Canada II had the best fourth run of 53.17 seconds. They finished +0.85 hundredths of a second slower than Canada I.

In third place was the duo of Pac and brakeman Elana Meyers of USA II. They finished +1.12 seconds slower than Canada I with a time of 3:33.40, and +0.27 hundredths slower than Canada II. USA II's fourth run was their poorest of the four (53.78), but that was still good enough for the bronze medal, where the idea late in the day was just to stay upright and complete the heats. One of the 21 sleds, Germany II, crashed. That German team was in fourth place entering the final heat.

Pac accomplished this feat, despite suffering a hamstring injury earlier in the week.

Today's medal-winning performance by Pac is the first by a Springfield College athlete since Jeff Blatnick won a gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles. The only other known Olympic medal-winner from Springfield College came in the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne by swimmer William Yorzyk, who won the gold in the 200 butterfly.
