Winter Haven, Fla. - March 19, 2014 - The Springfield College baseball team continued its Spring Break trip in Florida, beating Hope, 5-1 on Wednesday.
The Pride registered 12 hits on the afternoon, while Hope was limited to just two hits in the nine inning contest.
Mike DeMille (Milton, Mass.) pitched strong in his first outing of the year. He earned the win on the mound, going seven innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out three.
Pete Baranski (Hamden, Conn.) pitched two solid innings of relief, holding Hope scoreless in that span.
At the plate, Dan Bergami (Schenectady, N.Y.) paced the Pride offensively, producing three hits while racking up three RBI and tallying one double. Brett Poulin (Atascadero, Calif.), CJ Monroe (Wolcott, Conn.), and Steve Starr (Lebanon, Conn.) each provided two hits in the victory.
Springfield plated three runs in the second inning to take early control. With runners on the corners, Bergami laced a double down the right field line to score Monroe. A Billy Paskowski (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) groundout allowed Poulin to cross the plate, and Bergami would later score on a Hope fielding error.
Bergami added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, scoring Sean Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.), and later drove in Smith on a single to left center in the sixth.
Springfield will continue play on Thursday, playing William Paterson at 2:00 p.m.
