Paul Purdy Named Pilgrim Player Of The Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 2, 2004 - Springfield College senior attackman Paul Purdy (Brewster, Mass.) was named the Pilgrim Lacrosse League Player of the Year and joined sophomore attackman Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.), senior midfielder Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Sean Harrington (Suffern, N.Y.) on the All-Conference First Team, as voted by the conference's coaches Monday afternoon.

Purdy ranks third in the league in assists (2.0 apg) and fourth in the league in scoring (3.88 ppg). The team captain was named the Pilgrim League Player of the Week twice this season, including on April 26 after a seven-goal, four-assist performance against Western New England that clinched the top-seed for the Pilgrim League Tournament. He also became the eighth player in school history to score 200 points and stands seventh all-time in career scoring with 202 to date.

Brown leads the league with 4.50 points per game and 2.50 assists per game. He recorded a season-high eight points twice this spring with a three-goal, five-assist showing at WNEC (April 26) and six goals and two assists in a win at MIT (April 24). The only underclassman named a pre-season Division III All-American this spring, he garnered All-League honors as well as the Pilgrim East Division Player and Rookie of the Year last season.

Gibson is tied for fifth in the league with 32 goals and ranks eighth with 45 points. After an injury sidelined him for most of the 2003 season, he bounced back to become the highest-scoring midfielder in school history this spring. He is currently 14th on SC's all-time scoring list with 145 points (98 goals, 47 assists). He scored five goals on two occasions this season, including the Pride's season-opener against No. 3 Washington College.

Harrington, also a team captain, anchored a Pride defense has held its opponents to a 8.25 scoring average, which ranks third in the league. He ranks 10th in the league with 52 ground balls, and picked up a season-high 13 in SC's win over Williams on March 31.

The Pride are awaiting an opponent for the NCAA Division III Tournament, which starts Wednesday, May 12. Brackets will be announced on Sunday, May 9th at 8:30 p.m.
