Men's Gymnastics Opens 2008 Season 4th of 6 Collegiate Teams at the West Point Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – January 18-19, 2008 – The Springfield College men’s gymnastics team finished fourth of six collegiate teams competing in the West Point Invitational this evening. It was the opening meet of the year for the Pride men’s gymnastics team.

The collegiate portion of the meet was won by Temple, which finished with 339.550 points. Following Temple, it was Navy at 332.250, Army at 330.100, Springfield at 321.400, Arizona State at 313.900, and MIT at 306.500. Other non-collegiate teams who competed included Team Gattaca at 347.100, Mass. Gymnastics Center at 304.700, and American Gymnastics Training Center at 272.450.

The top eight individuals in six different events advanced to Saturday night’s individual competition. The only Springfield College competitor to advance was senior JJ Ferreira (Naugatuck, Conn.) in the floor exercise. JJ finished seventh with a score of 14.300. Then on Saturday night, Ferreira finished better by placing fourth, albeit with a score of 14.100.

In other scores Friday evening, sophomore Matt Tocchio (Braintree, Mass.) took 12th in the pommel horse (13.500) and 15th in the parallel bars (13.650).
