Donnelly, Moscardelli Lead Women's Soccer over WPI, 3-1

Erica Donnelly Box Score

Springfield, Mass. -- October 8, 2011 -- Junior forward Erica Donnelly and senior midfielder Jackie Moscardelli, who each hail from Weymouth, Mass., were the offensive stars as the Springfield College women's soccer team today defeated WPI, 3-1, at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex on a sunny afternoon. With the win, the Pride jumps its record to 7-3-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

WPI is now 2-10-1 overall, 0-4-1 in the conference.

For Springfield, this marks its third NEWMAC win in a row.

Springfield got on the board first just over six minutes into the contest. Moscardelli’s header attempt found the cross bar, but deflected right to Donnelly. The ball bounced high enough for Donnelly to attempt a header of her own, this one finding the back of the net to put the Pride up 1-0.

Springfield continued to attack aggressively without giving up shots on the other end. Moscardelli then shook loose on the right side of the WPI goal and found Donnelly right in front of the net. The senior co-captain hit Donnelly with the pass and Donnelly chipped it over the goalie’s outstretched arms for her second goal of the game.

Midway through the second half, the Engineer offense broke through. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Ames (Glastonbury, Conn.) got the ball off of a Pride turnover and nailed a high arching shot from 25 yards to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the hosts.

WPI could not muster another goal. In the 87th minute, after a penalty deep in the WPI zone, Moscardelli nailed the penalty kick to put the game away, 3-1 in favor of the Pride.

Springfield outshot WPI 26-5 for the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, N.Y.) tallied 11 saves for the Engineers while Pride backup goalie Hanna MacDougall (Warren, R.I.) recorded three.

Springfield dominated the corner kicks, 12-1.

The Pride women are back in action at home on Tuesday night when they host UMass-Dartmouth at 7 pm.
