No. 3 Middlebury Defeats No. 18 Men's Lacrosse, 9-7

MIDDLEBURY, Vt., March 16 – The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team opened up its 2005 season with a 9-7 win over Springfield College on Kohn Field. The Panthers are ranked third in the latest Division III national poll, while SC is No. 18.

Springfield led 1-0 before the Panthers went on a four-goal run to take a 4-1 lead midway through the second quarter. The teams exchanged goals before Middlebury took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break.

Jim Cabrera opened the second half scoring for Middlebury at the 4:46 mark, before freshman Steve Krasco (Medford, Mass.) and senior Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) answered 37 seconds apart to make it a 6-4 game. Cabrera scored his second goal of the quarter with 1:38 left to increase the advantage to 7-4 after three quarters.

Springfield opened the fourth quarter scoring, before goals from Cabrera and Dave Leach gave the Panthers a comfortable 9-5 lead with 3:46 remaining. The Pride hung tough and scored a pair of man-up goals in the game’s last 1:09 to make it a 9-7 final.

Senior Adam Cost (Camillus, N.Y.) and senior Shawn Cofrin (Derry, N.H.) each had a pair of goals to lead Springfield (0-3).

Alex Palmisano made nine saves in goal to earn the win for the Panthers, while freshman Kyle Cloutier (South Hadley, Mass.) made 13 saves for the Pride.
