Springfield had six student athletes selected as National Collegiate Men’s Gymnastics National Qualifiers by the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Committee. The national qualifier, which consists of two pre-qualifying sessions, will be conducted April 15.
Three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance from each pre-qualifying session to the finals session. Final competitions will take place April 16-17, also at the U.S. Military Academy.
Springfield's Ty Evans and Josh Fox were both selected to compete in the all-around competition. Evans owned the top qualifying among the individual qualifiers score of 84.600, while Fox qualified with a mark of 83.710.
Freshman Jimmy Pezzino will make his first trip to nationals and will compete in a pair of events as he qualified for the floor exercise with a 14.400 and the vault with a mark of 15.520.
Teammate Matt Tocchio will represent Springfield on the pommel horse with a qualifying score of 13.860. Kyle Bartgis will be competing in the parallel bars as he registered the top qualifying score among individual qualifiers of 14.010. Rounding out the Pride's representatives is Josh Spencer, who qualified on the horizontal bar with a mark of 13.700.
