Connecticut College Rallies Past Field Hockey, 2-1

New London, Conn. - September 14, 2011 - Despite a 1-0 first-half lead, the Springfield College field hockey team could not hold off Connecticut College as it dropped a 2-1 decision in a non-conference game played on the on the Artificial Turf at Silfen Field Wednesday.

Rookie net-minder Becca Napolitano recorded 13 saves and Brittany Fitzgerald had a goal and an assist to lead undefeated Connecticut College (3-0) to the win.

Springfield outshot the Camels 14-6 in t the contest and held an 11-8 edge in penalty corners.

Sophomore forward Kelly Gallo accounted for the Springfield College goal, while Alexa Carlson assisted on the tally. First year defender Emily Rodgers recorded a defensive save in the first half for the Pride, who slipped to 0-2 with the setback. Tory Sowizral recorded three saves for the visitors.

Gallo put the visitors on the board with 1:24 remaining in the opening half and the visitors carried the 1-0 advantage into the break.

But in the second stanza, Napolitano kept the Camels in contention with some clutch goaltending. With 19:40 remaining in regulation, Napolitano sprinted all the way out to near the top of the circle to break up a one-on-one situation on what easily could have been another goal for Gallo. Just over a minute later, the Pride applied heavy pressure but Napolitano made back to back saves with her blocker on shots by Rodgers and Lynn Donoghue.

The Camels battled back and with 16:15 remaining as Paige Murray rifled home a shot on a penalty corner to knot things up at one. Later on with 8:34 left, Fitzgerald put the Camels on top for good with a shot from the left side of the circle.

Springfield will visit Keene State College Sunday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. game.
