Softball Concludes Season With 5-0 Setback To Rowan in NCAA Championship

Melissa Nelson Box Score

Babson Park, Mass. - May 12, 2013 - The Springfield College softball team's season came to a close on Sunday afternoon as second-seeded Rowan University won its second straight elimination game, defeating the fourth-seeded Pride, 5-0, at the Babson Park Regional at Alumni Field.

With its third victory of the tournament, Rowan moves to 40-8 on the season while Springfield sees its year come to an end at 28-20. The Pride was hampered by a season-high five errors in the contest.

Krysti Maronski (14-2) struck out eight and did not allow a walk on the way to her second win in as many games for the Profs. She has now tossed two consecutive complete-game shutouts, striking out 15 while allowing just nine hits and one walk. Jennifer Arcella finished with a pair of extra-base hits and sophomore Shannon Costello went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

First-year Jenna Webb had a three-hit day for the Pride and senior Chelsea Bender added a double. Junior Ashley Marino took the loss, allowing one earned run on six hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings of work. Sophomore Caisie Cadorette gave up a pair of runs, both unearned, and two hits over 1 1/3 innings.

Rowan had a golden opportunity to break the game open in the top of the third inning as Arcella and senior Stephanie Labas reached on back-to-back fielding errors and Maronski followed with an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Marino got the first out of the inning as sophomore Alysa Romero hit a sharp line drive right back to the circle and three pitches later Marino induced an inning-ending double play to keep the Profs from extending their lead.

Springfield had its best chance to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Webb reached on an infield single with one out. Bender then smacked a two-out double to left field to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Maronski buckled down, though, fanning her counterpart Marino to end the threat, preserving Rowan’s two-run lead.

Arcella doubled to left centerfield to lead off the fifth inning for the Profs but was left stranded after Marino got the next three batters to flyout. Costello reached on an infield single with one out and Rowan loaded the bases for the second time in the game as sophomore Jessica Phillips singled and first-year Shilah Snead walked with two outs. The Pride made a pitching change, giving the ball to Cadorette, and appeared as though they would escape danger once again, but a mishandled groundball allowed Costello to race home as the Profs pushed their advantage to 3-0.

Costello came through with an RBI single, plating Romero, to take a four run lead with one out and pinch-hitter Aubrey Newcombe followed with an RBI single to score junior Meagan Lee with the game’s final run.

With the victory, Rowan advances to its third elimination game of the tournament and a rematch with regional host Babson College at 2:15pm on Sunday afternoon.
