Golf Places Third at NECC Championships

2010 NECC Golf Championships Complete Results

Leicester, Mass. - October 10, 2010 - Led by the tournament's individual runner-up Craig DiFranco, the Springfield College men's golf team finished third at the NECC Championships on Sunday afternoon. Kyle DiFranco took home Rookie of the Year Honors after finishing tied for fourth.

As a team, Springfield totaled 622 strokes, including 307 in Sunday's round after registering 315 strokes in Saturday's opening round.

Elms College won the championship, finishing just two strokes ahead of runner up Babson College, while the Pride finished one shot behind Babson. Elms entered the day with a nine stroke lead on the Pride. Babson College came on strong on day two, shooting a round best 305 as a team.

Babson's Joseph Young was named the NECC Player of the Year after shooting a tournament best 145 after 36 holes. Young shot a 71 on day two; which was the lowest score of the two day tournament.

Kyle Simard, Henry Fall and Springfield's Kyle DiFranco had to play four extra holes to determine the NECC Rookie of the Year, before DiFranco finally prevailed, earning Rookie of the Year honors. Elms College coach Craig Cowles was selected by his peers as the NECC Coach of the Year. In addition, Coach Evan McDermott and his Daniel Webster Eagles earn the NECC Sportsmanship Award.

Earning First Team All New England Collegiate Conference was Joseph Young, Craig DiFranco, Kyle DiFranco, Phil Rurak, and Kyle Simard. The Second Team All New England Collegiate Conference was made up of Henry Fall, Emily Bouchard from Daniel Webster, Bryan Eger and Matt Foley from Babson and Thomas Sangeloty from Springfield College.

For the Pride, Craig DiFranco finished second with a 149 after firing a 75 on Sunday. His brother Kyle shot a 76 to tied for fourth (153), while Sangeloty shot a 78 to finish tied for ninth (160). Mike Nowakowski tied for 14th after totaling a 166 with an 84 on Sunday. Alex Brown closed out Springfield's scoring with a 78 en route to a two-day total of 167.

Head Coach Joe Eadie

Joe Eadie Joe Eadie enters his 20th season as the head men's golf coach at Springfield College in the fall of 2012. Eadie is the head golf professional at the Fenway Golf Range in nearby East Longmeadow, and is in the process of becoming a PGA Professional.
