Cartier Leads Women's Cross Country at Purple Valley Classic

Williamstown, Mass. - September 26, 2009 - The Springfield College women's cross country team finished seventh in the 6k race at the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams College on a perfect, Saturday afternoon. Lacey Cartier had the top finish for the Pride as she crossed the finish line in 29th place in 23:32.

In a race that featured some very strong competition, Springfield finished seventh out of 12 teams with 223 points. Johns Hopkins, currently ranked fourth nationally in Division III, proved its depth and took the meet title with a score of 29 points.

Caitlyn Crosby was the second fastest runner for Springfield as she placed 63rd in 24:56, and was closely followed by teammate Michelle Mirti, who finished in 66th in 24:58.

Freshman Katie Burns crossed the finish line in 25:52, good for 91st, while Alex Mustardo rounded out the Pride's scoring with a 78th place-finish in a time of 25:20.

The Pride will head north next weekend to run in the Keene State Invitational on Saturday.
